Chinese New Year in Bangkok and many Chinese communities across the country is often accompanied by celebratory activities such as burning joss paper, lighting firecrackers, and heavy traffic, all of which cause PM 2.5 dust levels to rise to worrying levels. The latest data in January 2025 indicated that PM 2.5 dust levels in some areas had risen to as high as 130 micrograms per cubic meter, which is at a level that is hazardous to health.
